1. Section 1 of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979 requires the Secretary of State to compile and maintain a schedule of monuments. Once included in the Schedule the monuments are protected under the terms of the Act.
2 . For monuments situated in England the Secretary of State is required to supply the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission for England (otherwise known as English Heritage) with a list of such monuments as are currently included in the Schedule. The list may cover the whole of England or be supplied in sections covering particular areas.
3. On receipt of a list from the Secretary of State, English Heritage must publish it. English Heritage must also, from time to time, publish any amendments which it receives from the Secretary of State.
4. Section IA(3) of the 1979 Act, as inserted by the National Heritage Act 1983, provides that any list published by English Heritage, together with-any published amendment, shall be evidence that the monuments listed are for the time being included in the Schedule.
5. This publication lists all the monuments in the above county included in the Schedule by the Secretary of State as at 31 December 1987.
