Welcome to Widecombe-in-the-Moor

This small Moorland village gathered together 26 different groups of people from within its ranks, (see below) of differing interests, to undertake a Festival of Village Life.  Each group was allocated a space within the Church, where they undertook to mount a display depicting “who they are”, and to display their contribution to village life as we embark on a new age.  It was an opportunity for us, as a community, to glance over our shoulder, to see where we have come from, before addressing both where we are today, and which path we might choose to follow in the century ahead.  An opportunity for reflection, to enjoy displays of floral beauty, intermingled with historical artifacts of all descriptions, and creativity in abundance.  We believe this will also be of great interest to all who visit us this year.

A large Wall-painting has been completed (see left, click on the image to see a larger version).  This was hung in April 2000.  It will cover the tall Gothic Arch leading tothe Bell Tower during the dusty building work in the Tower. Painted on Calico, 25 foot x 11 foot, by 5 local artists, it is the scene most people see as they approach the village from Hay Tor, from the top of Widecombe Hill, overlooking the church and village, & across the valley.  A photographic display will tell thetale of how such a large painting was done, and will be on display in the Church throughout the summer.

Building work commences during April with the erection of scaffolding over the Bell Tower end of the building.  This will remain throughout the summer, so it will be only the wall painting inside the Church that will show the Church building as it is usually seen.  Come along and visit us, see what it is we are trying to achieve, and if you believe what we are doing is of value, please contribute to our Tower Appeal Fund, which has a long way to go before all our bills are paid.
