ALBERT GEORGE KERNICK
1879 – 1947
Born in Widecombe Parish in August 1879 to George Kernick and Louisa French, Albert was the eldest of nine children, sisters Florence, Lilian, Elizabeth, Rosina, Cicely and Edith and brothers John Henry and Fred.
Albert attended Widecombe School from 1885. He was christened in Widecombe Church.
He married Adeline Hannaford in 1905 and they had three children Sidney born in 1906, Violet Adeline born in 1907 and Walter born in 1908.
In November 1916, aged 36 years and 3 months Albert enlisted for Military Service. He was posted to the 6th Reserve Battalion Worcestershire Regiment. However, under the terms of his enlistment, he was not “called to the colours” until July 1918 and was then posted to the 8th Battalion Worcestershires’ in Flanders. The Battalion remained in Belgium until February 1919 when they returned to the UK and Albert was discharged in March 1919.
Albert died in Ashburton in 1947 aged 67 years.
