The “Book of the Roll of Honour” is the culmination of five years of research by members of the Widecombe History Group. In 2013, research started to trace the names of men connected to Widecombe who served their “King and Country” during the Great War 1914 – 1918.
The original Roll of Honour, prepared in 1919 after the signing of the Armistice, was destroyed in the 1920’s. Consequently, the researchers had very little information about the men who may have been on the original list, and few positive leads to follow up.
Four years later a “Roll of Honour” was created, and this has been on display in St Pancras Church since Remembrance Day 2016. The list contains 51 names of men who came from Widecombe parish.
The “Book of the Roll of Honour” tells, in brief, the stories of these men and their families, before, during and after the Great War.
You will note six names which feature on our web-page commemorating the “fallen” from Widecombe parish that are not included in the “Book of the Roll of Honour”. This is because their names are included upon the Leusdon Roll of Honour displayed in St John the Baptist Church in Leusdon.
