CHARLES NORRISH (JUNIOR)
1896 – 1960
Charles was born in Ashburton in 1896, the third son of Charles Norrish, and Mary Irish. He had three sisters Selena, Susan and Celia, and five brothers, George, William, John, Thomas and Walter. Records show the Norrish family living at Lower Cator in the early 1900’s but by 1911 Charles (Senior) is listed as a cab proprietor living in Newton Abbot.
Following family turmoil in 1913 Charles (Junior) emigrated to Canada and obtained employment on the Canadian Pacific Railroad.
In January 1915, Charles enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Forces and was posted to the 2nd Regiment Canadian Mounted Rifles. The Regiment came to the Western Front in France where Charles was transferred to the 12th Regiment Canadian Mounted Rifles. The 12th fought in the Battles of the Somme and at Passchendaele.
During his military service Charles Norrish achieved the rank of Sergeant.
Upon his demobilisation in 1919 Charles returned to Canada where he set himself up as a butcher.
In 1921 he married Mary Woodley someone he had met whilst working for the railroad company, but whom he had known in Widecombe when Mary’s family lived at Cator prior to emigrating to Canada. Charles and Mary had one son named Charles.
Charles died in Alberta, Canada in 1960 aged 64.
