EDMUND REYNOLDS WILLOUGHBY RADCLIFFE

1900 – 1943

Edmund was born in Kensington, London, second son of Alexander Radcliffe and Isobel Grace Henderson. Edmund had an elder brother John Henderson and three elder sisters, Margaret Joan, Maud Elizabeth and Ruth Isobel.

Edmund was educated at a private school in East Grinstead and then Eton College.

Following training in the Eton College Cadet Force Edmund enlisted in the East Surrey Regiment (Guard Depot) just before the Armistice was signed in 1918. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant and seconded to the Coldstream Guards.

Details of his service are not available. Edmund returned to civilian life in 1920 and trained and practiced as a solicitor.

In 1924 he married Sybil Enid Elliot.

Edmund and Sybil had three children, twin boys Gilbert Courtney and Edmund Lyons and daughter Georgina Elliot.

Edmund was killed in Tunisia on 8th March 1943 whilst serving with the Parachute Regiment. His son Edmund Lyons Willoughby Radcliffe was “killed in action” in the Korean war in 1953.

Captain Edmund Reynolds Willoughby Radcliffe is commemorated on the War Memorial plaque in Widecombe Church.
