GEORGE HILL
1875 – ?
George was born in the parish of Henock and Thrusham near Moretonhampstead in 1875. His family details have not been established but George lived with his parents until the early 1900’s. Records indicate he was living at Hennock in 1911 and working as a “stone delver at a quarry”.
In 1915, George Hill enlisted in the Army being posted to the Army Service Corps. He quickly took and passed examinations to become a butcher (a trade practised by his father). George was posted abroad to the Egyptian Expeditionary Force in November 1915 and remained in the Egyptian/Palestinian Theatre throughout the War. It has not been possible to specify with which units George served.
He was demobilised in August 1919 aged 44.
George returned to Widecombe parish and lived at Forder Bridge, Ponsworthy with his new wife Sarah. A lack of records containing Sarah’s name after 1925 indicate she died during that year. George Hill remained at Ponsworthy until at least the late 1930’s.
No exact date of his demise has been located.
