JOSHUA NORTHMORE HORTON
1875 – 1949
It has not been possible to establish the service history of Joshua Northmore Horton. We know he was born in Cornwood in 1875,and moved to work at Glebe Farm Widecombe in the Moor in 1900/1901.
Joshua married Thirza Florence Warren in Widecombe Church in 1906 when he was aged 30.
Joshua’s name is included on the Roll of Honour because he is listed as an “absent Forces voter” on the 1918 electoral register for Leusdon although no record of service has been located.
Joshua continued to live in Widecombe after the end of the war living with his wife at his father-in-law’s address at Manor Cottages.
Joshua and Thirza had two children. Arthur born in 1907 and Thirza born in 1912. Arthur features regularly in village life especially after the war in the village tug-of-war team.
In 1928 Joshua obtained employment with Alexander Radcliffe at Bag Park, Widecombe where he was employed as a gamekeeper.
The family remained living at Bag Park until Joshua died in 1949, Thirza having died in 1939. He was 74 years old.
