OWEN KING

1891 – 1974

The second eldest son of James King and Aida Maria Ireland, Owen was born in 1891, and lived with his family at Dunstone. Owen attended Widecombe School and upon leaving found employment as a farm labourer.

In 1913, Owen enlisted in the Royal Navy signing on for a 12 year engagement. Like his elder brother John, Owen served as a stoker. He did however serve on a number of ships but spent his longest single deployment aboard HMS Exmouth between 1914/15 and a further posting in 1916/17.

During 1915, HMS Exmouth took part in the operations surrounding the landing of British and Commonwealth troops at Gallipoli. Following on with service based in the Aegean Sea supporting the Salonika Campaign. In 1917 Owen would have seen service in the Indian Ocean when Exmouth was based in Colombo.

Owen extended his Naval Service after the war and did not leave the Royal Navy until 1928.

In 1925,Owen married Ethel B Burrow but it has not been possible to trace any children of the marriage.

Owen King died in 1974 in Weston Super Mare aged 82.
