SAMUEL COURTIER
1897 – 1957
Samuel was born in North Bovey in 1897 the younger brother of James Courtier. His parents were James Courtier and Mary Thorne. Samuel originally lived at Heathercombe in Widecombe Parish but by the 1911 census was listed as a “Cattle boy” living at Riddon Farm.
At the age of 17 years and 6 months, Samuel was accepted into the Wessex Brigade as a soldier in the Ammunition column. Upon attaining his 18th birthday, he transferred into the Royal Field Artillery.
Following 12 months service in France in November 1915 his battery was posted to the Salonica Theatre of War and Samuel remained in this Theatre throughout the conflict. During his service Samuel had achieved promotion to the rank of Bombardier but after a short while requested a return to the rank of Gunner, which he retained throughout the remainder of the war.
Samuel was demobilised in March 1919.
In 1928, he married Alice Maude Hildreth in London and remained in that city working as a residential caretaker.
Samuel died in Windsor in 1957.
