SYDNEY GEORGE HAMBLEY
1890 – 1963
Sydney was born at Higher Uppacott, Widecombe in the Moor in 1890 to parents Stephen and Mary Hambley. He had one sister Alice Maud. By 1901 the Hambley family had moved to Blackadon Manor in Widecombe where father Stephen was employed as a Caretaker.
In 1910 Sydney emigrated to Canada to work with an uncle already resident in that country. The arranged meeting did not take place and Sydney had to depend upon his own talents to start his new life abroad.
By 1916 he had made contact with his uncle (also named Sidney) and was working as a “herdsman” in Essondale near Vancouver.
In 1918 Sydney was called up by the Canadian Military authorities and attested in January into the 1st Depot Battalion British Columbia Regiment.
Following his demobilisation Sydney revisited the UK in 1920. In 1924 he returned permanently, and married Lily Kernick a few months later. They settled in Widecombe in a house which they called “Vancouver”.
Sydney died in June 1963.
Both Sydney and Lily are buried in Widecombe Churchyard.
