THOMAS NOSWORTHY

1899 – 1978

Thomas was born in September 1899 to William Nosworthy and Sarah Mary Whiteway, in Widecombe in the Moor. He attended Widecombe School from 1905 until 1913 whilst the family were living at Dunstone.

Upon reaching the age of 18 in September 1917, Thomas enlisted in the Royal Navy. Following initial training at HMS Vivid in Devonport, Thomas was posted to HMS Valiant where he served the whole of his Naval career, which included involvement with supporting the “White Russian forces” in 1918/1919.

Following his demob in 1919, Thomas returned to Widecombe and started his employment as a mason and builder. Amongst the projects attributed to Thomas is the construction of the Widecombe Village sign and the building of the North Hall Café.

In 1928 Thomas married Thirza Irish, sister of John Irish, and their only child was daughter Pamela.

During the Second World War after failing to be allowed to re-enlist in the Armed Forces, Thomas joined the Devonshire Constabulary and amongst his duties was patrolling the deserted villages around Slapton Ley (where Operation Tiger, the D Day landing rehearsals were being conducted).

Thomas died in 1978 and is buried in Widecombe Churchyard.
