WALTER SAMUEL MORLEY
1886 – 1945
Walter was born in Runcorn in Cheshire in 1886 to John Morley and Mary Jane Stevens. He had three brothers, John H, Herbert, and Reginald and four sisters, Nellie, Lucy, Philipa, and Jessie May.
In 1903 aged 17, Walter enlisted in the Royal Marine Light Infantry but transferred to the Royal Navy in 1907. He then “signed on” for a 12 year engagement, which he later extended by a further 10years. Walter, during his Great War service sailed on many different ships and by the time he reached the end of service he had achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer specialising in Telegraphy.
In 1913, Walter married Queenie Palmer, sister of Richard Grenville Palmer. During their marriage they had three sons, Gilbert E, Robert G, and Clifford J.
Following his demobilisation in 1927 Walter and his family are believed to have lived in Ireland for a period but in 1939, Walter was recalled to the Royal Navy, at the age of 53, to assist with telegraphy training. Walter died in 1945. He is buried in Newton Abbot cemetery alongside eldest son Gilbert who was killed in the Second World War.
