WILLIAM HERBERT HANNAFORD

1893 -1986

William was the second eldest son of John Hannaford and Susan Nosworthy of Blackslade Farm in Widecombe. His elder brother was Lewis John and his other siblings were Sidney Owen, Mabel Annie and Ernest.

William attended Widecombe School between 1898 and 1907.

Records indicate the eldest Hannaford son, Lewis John was exempted from Military service to help run the family farm.

William enlisted for service with the 1st/4th Battalion Devonshire Regiment. In 1917, he was posted overseas with the Battalion to serve at Armara on the Tigrus River in Mesopotamia. The Battalion remained in this theatre until the end of the War stationed just north east of Baghdad.

Following his demobilisation in 1920, William married Susan Jane French and in 1926 had a daughter Mabel Elizabeth.

William Herbert died in 1986, aged 93.
