CHARLES HENRY VINCENT

1873 – 1929

Charles was born in December 1873 in Malmesbury, Wiltshire to Henry Vincent and Rose Anna Cainey.

Charles is documented as a private in the Wiltshire Regiment in the 1890’s and probably saw service in South Africa during the Boer War.

In 1898 he married Susan Prior in Malmesbury, and they later had eight children.

In 1914, at the declaration of War, Charles Vincent was 41 years of age but he enlisted with the 1st (Home Service) Garrison Battalion of the Dorsetshire Regiment. The Battalion trained troops to act as reinforcements for the Dorsetshire Regiment, and later other Regiments.

After the Great War, Charles Vincent moved to Widecombe and became one of the “Mr Bluejacket’s” employed as man servants by local authoress, Beatrice Chase. He was also churchwarden at St Pancras Church.

Charles died in November 1929 and was afforded a “military funeral” at St Pancras Church.
