SAMUEL WARREN
Also known as GEORGE
1894 – 1920
Samuel was born in 1894 in Ponsworthy to Edward Warren and Lucy Irish. Samuel had an older brother William John and a younger sister Lily.
Samuel attended Leusdon School until 1907 when he changed school to Widecombe as the family had moved to Kingshead Farm.
Samuel enlisted in the Armed Forces in December 1915 in the name of George Warren and was posted to 3rd/7th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment.
Before being sent abroad in 1916 Samuel married Alice Hamley, and two years later son, Cyril, was born.
During 1917, whilst serving on the Western Front, he suffered severe gunshot wounds and was invalided back to the UK. Samuel was never considered fit enough to return to the front line. He was transferred to the Labour Corps and spent 2 years serving with various Labour Corps companies usually aiding “food production”. He was demobbed in May 1919.
Samuel died in July 1920 and his death was attributed to his wounds from the War causing “various internal complaints”.
