FREDERICK MINERS
1880 – 1940
Born in Chasewater, Cornwall in 1880, Frederick married Mary Alice Paddon from Beaford in North Devon in 1898, they had four children William Frederick, Gwendoline, Samuel and Dorothy.
Frederick moved to Widecombe in the early 1900’s working as a farm labourer at Lizwell farm and living at Windwhistle Cottages. In 1913 the family had moved to live in Dunstone.
In 1916 Frederick, then aged 36, enlisted in the Devonshire Regiment, although not considered “fit enough” for frontline duties.
Frederick was transferred to the Labour Corps and carried out much maintenance work behind the front line to support the fighting troops.
Towards the end of the War, when food was in short supply, many troops with agricultural experience serving with the Labour Corps were returned to the UK to assist in the production of food.
Frederick was demobbed from the Labour Corps in 1919 and returned to live with his family at Dunstone.
Wife Mary passed away in 1940 and Frederick died in 1948 aged 69. Both are buried in Widecombe Churchyard.
