HENRY ALBERT LAMB
1889 – 1964
Henry Albert Lamb was born in St Anne’s in the London Borough of Haringey in 1889. He moved to Devon at the age of 11 to live with his uncle, Aaron Warren, at Manor Cottages Widecombe in the Moor.
In August 1916, whilst living at Manor Cottages, Henry enlisted in the Royal Navy. Following basic training at HMS Vivid in Devonport Henry was posted to HMS Devonshire, upon which ship he served as a stoker. She was assigned to the North America and West Indies Station for the whole of Henry’s service and was deployed on convoy escorts across the Atlantic.
Following his demobilisation in June 1919, Henry returned to Widecombe to continue his work as a stone mason. In 1921 he married Gladys Edna Nosworthy, and in 1927 became the freeholder and licensee of the Rugglestone Inn.
Henry died in 1964 but the Inn continued in the Lamb family through wife Edna and daughter, Audrey, until it was sold in 1992.
