GEORGE COAKER
1889 – 1923
Was born in Widecombe parish in 1889 to parents Jonas Coaker and his wife Mary. George had eight sisters many of whom continued to live in Widecombe parish following marriage to local young men. By 1911 George was living with just his father at Pizwell farm.
We have not been able to establish George’s exact military service. We believe when he “attested” in 1916 he was posted to the Royal Fusiliers. It would seem his physical fitness was not good enough for him to be considered for front line fighting. He was transferred to the Labour Corps Regiment attached to the Fusiliers and served with the Regiment through until 1919 when he was demobilised.
George married Edith Amy Newman from Camberwell in December 1919.
George died in 1923.
George’s Son John is also Commemorated in Widecombe’s World War Two Pages
