SAMUEL JOHN CAUNTER
1894 – 1959
Born in Lydford in 1894 Samuel is listed on the 1901 census as living in the village with his parents . By 1911 Samuel was employed as a cowman and was living with Mr French the farmer at Sherrill Farm in Poundsgate.
Samuel originally attested for service with the Army in 1915 but was not called up until the following year. His then employer applied for an exemption for Samuel because of his essential worker status on his farm. A short extension of the deferment was granted but Samuel was called to the colours in 1917.
Samuel served with the 121st Heavy Battery Army Reserve, but was later transferred to 277 Siege Battery Royal Garrison Artillery. He saw action on the Western Front with 277 Battery. At the end of hostilities Samuel voluntarily extended his service until April 1920.
No records have been found of Samuel marrying. He died in October 1959.
