WALTER KINLOCH KITSON

1877 – 1952

Walter was in born in Torquay in 1877 to Charles William Kitson and Melina Mosley Kinloch. Following Kitson family tradition, Walter became a solicitor and had a practice in Torquay. Like his uncle, Robert Paul Kitson, he also was a junior officer in the Haytor Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment.

In 1913, William married Julie Elizabeth Empson of Shipton, Yorkshire. The couple had two children, William born in 1914 and Elizabeth Faith born in 1916.

In 1914 Walter re-enlisted in the 2nd/5th Devonshire Regiment being given the rank of Lieutenant. He received a promotion to Captain just before the Battalion was posted to Egypt in 1916. Later in 1916, the 2nd/5th was disbanded and the troops divided amongst other Devonshire Regiment Battalions. No information could be found of Walter Kitson’s service until 1918 when he is recorded as Adjutant and Quarter Master at a Command Depot. (Convalescent Camp)

Following his demobilisation, Walter dissolved his partnership in his firm of solicitors in Torquay and set himself up as a “gentleman farmer”.

Walter remained farming and living at Hedge Barton until his death in 1952 aged 75, Julie remained in residence until her death in 1954.
